Excerpt from Two Secrets to Surrender © 2025 Grace Callaway

Lady Georgiana Flora Aileen Harrington—“Gigi” to friends—skipped through the autumn-kissed woods. Beneath her feet, the mossy floor was plusher than an Aubusson, and sunlight dappled through the leaves like a natural chandelier. She breathed in the scents of the forest, feeling more at home here than in the ballrooms of London. From the moment she’d arrived at Chudleigh Bottoms, she had experienced a sense of belonging. Her brother Ethan had taken up residence in one of the local manors, and while many viewed “Chuddums” as being downtrodden—local lore even claimed it was cursed—Gigi had instantly fallen in love with the village and its people.

She’d become great friends with Miss Leticia Caldecott, a lovely spinster who owned Chudleigh Bottoms’s World Famous Roman Bath. Contrary to its name, the spa had been fading into obscurity, and Gigi had suggested refurbishing the place. Miss Letty had embraced the idea, and today the pair had cleaned out a room that generations of Caldecotts had used for storage space. Afterward, seeing that her maid had fallen asleep on one of the spa’s benches, Gigi had decided to slip away to the nearby stream. She inhaled the forest scents as she passed by curious squirrels and scurrying partridges. In the distance, a woodpecker tapped out an enigmatic message. For a little while, freedom was hers.

Arriving at her destination, Gigi took in the scene with delight. The stream was clear, diamonds sparkling on its surface. Along its banks, wildflowers had lost their bloom, but the grass remained stubbornly verdant. An ancient yew tree, its gnarled trunk swirling with the secrets of time, stood like a sentinel. Boulders dotted the water’s edge, some of them large enough to lay upon while one basked in the sun.

The beauty and warmth of the day was too splendid to ignore. Gigi adored swimming, and moreover—she gave herself a discreet sniff—a wash was not entirely optional. Glimpsing her reflection in the water, she smiled. Letty had loaned her a stained and threadbare frock to wear while cleaning, and with her raven hair plaited and covered by an old kerchief, Gigi looked more like a country maid than the daughter of a marquess. It reminded her of the carefree summers spent at the family estate, where she’d grown up swimming and climbing trees with her three older brothers.

She followed the brook to a secluded pool surrounded by large rocks. There, the water had a sudden drop, resulting in a small but delightful waterfall…perfect for rinsing off. She was untying her kerchief when a splash startled her. Her gaze flew to the liquid curtain of water, behind which a dark shape suddenly lurked. It was massive…monster-like.

Instinctively, she took refuge behind the nearest boulder. Her heart pounding, she counted to ten before daring to peer around it. The shape had disappeared. Had she imagined it? The form suddenly broke the surface of the pool, and she clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle her gasp. Then she realized how fanciful she’d been.

Why, it is not a monster. It—he—is just a man.

Although only the fellow’s head was above the water, the refined savagery of his features caused her heart to thump against her ribs. His broad, slashing cheekbones and light, piercing eyes belonged on a Viking crusader. His nose was bold and arrogant, his jaw hewn with an unyielding edge. With a rough gesture, he swiped back the dark-blond hair plastered to his brow before diving under again.

Her pulse racing, she watched his shadow glide below the water. Suddenly, he surged upward, standing below the waterfall and giving her a view of his profile. Her heart broke into a gallop as, through the rushing curtain of water, she glimpsed a naked male for the first time.

Oh my stars.

He was exceedingly tall, and his taut, grooved derriere—just thinking the word made her blush—was visible above the pool’s surface. Even though she knew she should look away, she didn’t. She couldn’t. His blatant virility was like a magnet to her curiosity. He was lean and muscular, with the kind of honed strength that did not require bulk. As he rinsed himself, cascading water sluiced off his broad shoulders, giving her peekaboo views of his contoured back.

He turned, facing her, and her lungs emptied in a dizzying whoosh.

Oh my stars and garters.

Her eyes widened at the sight of his manhood…because, of course, that was where her gaze went. Ogling a naked stranger was beyond improper, yet curiosity and fascination kept her gaze riveted. She’d seen the male anatomy depicted in classical paintings and sculpture and always thought this part of a man looked, well, a bit silly. Like a worm curled upon a wrinkly plum. Yet there was nothing silly at all about this fellow, and his thingamajig wasn’t a worm but more of a…a snake. Thick and long, it swayed sinuously between his muscular thighs.

In truth, this part of him matched his outsized masculinity. Chiseled blocks covered his chest and narrowed into tight bands upon his torso. His hips were topped with a vee of sinew. Whorls of hair adorned his chest, narrowing into a trail down his abdomen that pointed straight at his… At that instant, he wrapped his hand around his thingamabob. It leapt within his fist, rearing up, its crimson head burgeoning beyond the reach of his grip. When he gave it a rough jerk, she squeaked in surprise.

He whipped his head in her direction. “Who’s there?”

Like the crack of a rifle, his voice chased birds into the skies. Gigi ducked behind the rock. She held completely still; it helped that panic paralyzed her. Her thoughts, however, kicked up turf like the horses at the Royal Ascot.

Did he see me? Should I run? Hide?

Being a lady of action, she made a run for it. Staying low and hopefully hidden by the boulders, she moved as quickly as she could. The mud along the bank sucked at her shoes, making squelching noises that she prayed wouldn’t give her away. Nearly at the yew tree, she risked a glance behind her. No sign of the man in the pool. Had he gone beneath the water again?

I’ll take refuge behind the tree and decide my next steps.

Just as she reached the tree, the Viking materialized in front of her. She skidded to a halt, barely avoiding a collision with his dripping form. How on earth had such a large fellow moved with such stealth?

Not that it mattered: she was well and truly caught.

The realization quivered through her, and she trembled, pressing back against the yew’s bark. The stranger faced her, his large bare feet planted in an aggressive stance, his hands braced on his hips. He’d tied a towel around his waist, but it hung rather low and drew attention to the girdle of muscle over his hips. He seemed unconcerned that he was mostly naked and wet, and she wished she could be as indifferent. Up close, she saw his eyes were a riveting sea green. His resemblance to a legendary Norseman was even more evident: he was all twisting sinew and rough edges, battle scars marking his chest and knuckles.

“I thought I heard something,” he said.

His voice was husky and deep, less booming than it had been moments before. This relieved her. She had a talent for reading people, and he didn’t seem angry, which he would have every right to be, considering that she had been spying on him like some Peeping Tom…or Thomasina, rather. Since she didn’t recognize him from the village, she guessed he was passing by: a sailor, most likely, whose ship was temporarily anchored at the Chuddums docks. Yet his polished accent didn’t sound quite like that of a typical seaman…perhaps he was a captain? That would explain his aura of command. Her papa had been a lieutenant-colonel during the war against Boney, and he evinced that same innate authority.

Speaking of Papa, he and Mama are going to murder me if they find out about this.

“What is your name?” the stranger asked.

Apprehension seized Gigi. Everything about the situation spelled “RUINATION” in capital letters. She had to get away as quickly as possible, without this fellow discovering that the only daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Blackwood had shamelessly spied upon him while he bathed.

Think of a plan, Gigi. You’re good at plans.

He cocked his head. “Don’t you talk?”

At that instant, the solution came to her. Thanks to her outfit, she looked like a country maid who’d spent the day doing chores. The only thing that would foil her disguise was her accent.

The best way to protect my identity is to remain silent—to let nothing slip.

Widening her eyes, she shook her head.

He drew his brows together. “You cannot speak?”

She shook her head again.

He studied her. “But you do understand me?”

After a moment, she nodded.

“Well, I don’t mind silence.” A corner of his mouth tipped up lazily. “Truth be told, I could use more of it in my life.”

Oh no.

He came closer. Every instinct screamed “Retreat!”, yet she had nowhere to run. She was caught between the tree and his equally unyielding form. He leaned a big hand on the trunk by her shoulder. His proximity set off a chain of foreign sensations. Her blood rushed beneath her skin, and her bones felt oddly liquid. Even when waltzing, she’d never been this close to a man…never mind one with a bare, rippling chest. A rash of heat spread over her insides.

Her breath unsteady, she contemplated her next move. Screaming would be useless; there was no one to hear her. However, she was no wilting violet and had three older brothers who’d imbued her with useful knowledge. Owen, the closest to her in age, had given the simplest advice: If some bounder tries to compromise you, poppet, you knee him where it hurts and make a run for it.

She snuck a peek at the Viking’s you-know-what.

Merciful heavens, is that a bulge beneath his towel? Did his male member grow?

On the bright side, the size of her target guaranteed that she would not miss. She tensed and prepared to execute the defensive maneuver.

“You’re not scared, are you?” the stranger murmured. “Upon my honor, I’ve never forced a woman and never will.”

Upon my honor. The phrase stayed the upward motion of her knee. When her brothers or papa uttered those words, it meant something because they were gentlemen, and honor was important to them. Was it possible that this fellow also had integrity? His uncouth behavior would argue against it…yet that would be a case of the pot calling the kettle black, wouldn’t it? Being a fair-minded person, she knew her own impropriety had contributed to the present fiasco.

Should I trust in this man’s honor?

“In exchange for giving you a show, all I ask for is a boon in return.”

She squirmed against the tree. She wasn’t certain which was more mortifying: that she’d ogled a naked fellow or that she’d been caught doing it. But she wasn’t about to add insult to injury by getting herself compromised.

“I am not asking for anything excessive,” he said easily. “Just tit for tat.”

Tit for tat? He must be mad. If he thinks I am going to remove my clothes—

As if gleaning her thoughts, he laughed. “I’m not expecting a show, sweetheart. Not that I’m averse if you would like to give me one.”

She hoped her narrow-eyed look conveyed her reaction to his suggestion and his cheap endearment.

“No show, then.” He held up his hands, looking as innocent as a mostly naked, sopping wet Viking could look. “How about a kiss, then? After that, we part ways, no debts between us. You have my word.”

Chewing her lip, she considered his proposal. A kiss was a small price to pay to escape the situation and, at two-and-twenty, she wasn’t inexperienced. She’d allowed a few suitors to kiss her, and the experiences had been pleasant, if not particularly memorable. She’d wondered why her friends had giggled and blushed as they’d talked about kissing…wondered if she had missed out on something.

Will the Viking’s kiss be any different?

Hastily, she tamped down the thought. Obviously, she wasn’t interested in kissing this stranger. She was only doing it for expediency’s sake.

She held up her index finger to emphasize the terms of their bargain.

“One kiss,” he confirmed.

A kiss, then I’m off. What could be easier?

She angled her chin up, closed her eyes, and pursed her lips.

My second favorite Grace book is the parents’ book of these Blackwood siblings so, of course, they are going to be just as fabulous. I really dug Conrad. He is a dirty talker, and don’t we all love that. There is so much angst in this book and I am there for all of the angst. I admired Gigi for standing up for her friends and what is right. This story had a lot packed into it: mystery (I did not guess Conrad’s first secret), revenge, murder (guess who the villain really is?), plenty of smexy times and love, oh the love. Grace’s stories are such easy reads. I just want to keep reading one more chapter, just one more chapter. Her writing is superb.

Oh boy, I am so looking forward to James and Evie’s story. Love, love a second chance romance.

  2. Gloria Pastorino –

Great book, really emotional and very hot! Callaway is a great writer whose characters are always wonderfully vivid and well fleshed out. Gigi and Conrad are passionate, fiery, stubborn, a real match for each other! I must confess that Conrad irked me a little even if I understood his need for revenge and I didn’t like how he treated Gigi sometimes, but she knew how to stand up to him. I love when the characters are flawed and also somewhat morally grey and even if they are loved for who they are, they try to improve and change their ways for love. Unputdownable, to say the least!

A very entertaining and passionate read!

I loved this book; it is a page-turner. The story flows so well, and so much happens in this romance. The main characters, Gigi and Conrad, are marvellous. Gigi is a young woman full of energy. She is generous, rebellious, and intelligent. Conrad is a ruthless and wealthy businessman. He has secrets and an unquenchable quest for vengeance. As we discovered his personality, we could see beneath his hard exterior, and we found his scars and his vulnerability. They are evidently attracted to each other from the start. However, their goals make them enemies. Together, Gigi and Conrad have a tumultuous, yet passionate relationship. In this romance, I found humour, conflict, struggles, a touch of mystery, and passionate love. I adored this enemies-to-lovers romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Well this was absolutely delightful. Gigi is the daughter of a previous Callaway couple and the youngest in the family. She’s protected and cosseted and a bit spoiled but she hungers for more. Wealthy businessman Conrad Godwin has secrets and a deep desire for vengeance. His past is dark and full of scars, physical and emotional. I loved watching these two match wits while fighting and then giving into their attraction. Can’t wait for the next one in the series.

Content notes: reference to child abuse, toxic family, bullying, attempted murder, kidnapping

  5. Courtney –

The second book in the Blackwood Legacy series follows the youngest offspring – Lady Gigi. If you’ve read her parents’ book then you can definitely tell she’s Pandora’s daughter. She’s lively and courageous with a generous kind heart, just like her mama. It was nice to read how she found her match with Conrad.

As with all Callaway books, this one was full of steam and adventure. I loved Gigi and Conrad’s banter in the beginning when they found themselves stuck together when they were enemies. I also enjoyed reading about the residents of Chudleigh Bottoms again. Overall, this was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I wish Conrad had grovelled a bit more at the end as I didn’t really like his behaviour once they’ve married.

  6. Bridget Lewis –

We have Lady Georgiana Flora Aileen Harrington—“Gigi” who is the youngest and only daughter but has always known her own mind and heart! She is more mature than most ladies her age and she has the full support of her parents to find a love match! We also have a hero/villain who has been battered, bruised and beaten but still maintains a small shred of humanity! Conrad Godwin aka secret identity is a rake through and through but everyone he has ever cared about left him! The women didn’t want him or used him so he is ruthless in business as well as relationships! He absolutely expects the worst! He is vulnerable but tries his best to hide it so it is somewhat difficult to see at first! These two have secrets but Conrad more than others and several attempts on his life one of which is thwarted by Gigi and this of course brings them closer! Their chemistry is explosive like fire and gasoline but their trust is very slow going! It is understandable after Conrad begins to open up! But can a man who has never really known love and Gigi who is surrounded by it ever have a HEA! Gigi is starting to share memories of the star crossed lovers of Chudleigh Bottoms! This a different season could these two possibly be the second couple? Miss Letecia Caldecott and good friend to Gigi has worked diligently to revive the spa in Chudleigh Bottoms! Gigi and Conrad have a very steamy scene there but it didn’t end the way I thought it would!? This whole story is a page turner with one thing after another so riveting you don’t know what’s next! But you know it will be good! Can’t wait to read the next one and Chudleigh Bottoms is a place you want to visit or just laugh at its antics! Bravo well done! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!

  7. Anne –

A sizzling romance with passion, desire and a battle of wits that turns into undeniable attraction and love. I loved the wonderful setting within the quirky village of Chudleigh Bottoms. Gigi and Conrad are perfection, opposites and enemies with secrets and prophecies but their connection is everything.

  8. Carissa –

Gigi is the baby and only daughter of the Harrington family. She loves the village Chuddleigh Bottoms and is helping her friend set up a spa and bottle water that helps pair matched couples together. When she goes to the lake has a meet cute with Conrad Godwin who was already bathing and there was this instant attraction. Conrad is a previous prize fighter and self made rich man. He wants to take down the village because he has a deep secretive past for his reasons to do so. Gigi isn’t going to let that happen. Great enemies to lovers, forced proximity. This also has an underlying Greek tone of satyr chasing a water nymph which was fun to read. Look forward to more. I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

  9. Debbie Steed –

I loved reading this second book in the Blackwood Legacy series. It had adventure, mystery, tension and surprises. It also had wonderful spicy scenes, a fantastic storyline and wonderful characters.

Lady Gigi Harrington is the only daughter of a marquess with three older, protective brothers and loving parents. She loves the village she lives in; Chuddleigh Bottoms and considers many of the villagers her friends. Gigi feels her family doesn’t see her as mature enough to have options, but she’s no shrinking violet and will fight for what she believes in.

Conrad Goodwin is a self made man who has dark secrets and is hell bent on revenge on those who ruined his childhood and to reclaim his rightful legacy. The ruination of Chuddley Bottoms is on the top of his revenge list. Everyone he has interacted personally with in his life has either let him down or hurt him.

There’s plenty of smoking hot scenes interspersed in the plot along with an attempted murder, family problems, trying to end the curse of Chuddley Bottoms and Conrad and Gigi falling in love. In the end Conrad will have to decide between revenge and love. There’s also plenty of surprises that I didn’t see coming. There was so much that happened in this story but it never felt rushed and flowed seamlessly. It was a great read that had me engaged and entertained from the first page to the last.

I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series of James and Evie.
I received a special copy of this book from the author. I’m voluntarily

  11. Leslie G –

Lady Gigi Harrington has a plan to reinvigorate her struggling village and prove she’s more than just a pretty debutante. But businessman Conrad Godwin has an agenda of his own and soon the two find themselves locking horns…and lips.

This is the second book in the Blackwood Legacy series. The book can stand alone, although Gigi’s brother is the hero of book one and their town’s history was previously introduced. This is also a second generation series, as the Harrington parents were the featured couple in The Lady Who Came in From the Cold (Heart of Enquiry, book three).

At first, I was worried that there was a lot going on with this tale: a hero with a shady identity, multiple vendettas, and a village that might be cursed. But Callaway manages to weave it all together and make the reader care about these characters. Some of Conrad’s past got a little muddy for me…I wasn’t sure if I overlooked something or there was just a lot of people that “did him dirty.” I was frustrated with his actions in the second half, but that’s why I’d lean him into villainous hero territory. He puts his pain and vengeance first and has to redeem himself. As always, Calloway’s high heat level gets two thumbs up! 4.5 stars rounded to 5.

This book is 2nd in a series from Grace Callaway. I love all her books, their always steamy and original. This one was no exception. I liked the 2 main characters. This a steamy enemy to lover story. It has humor, romance and a little mystery. I recommend it to every historical romance lover.
I received an arc of this book. My opinions are my own.

  13. MG Robinson –

“…his lips curved in a wicked smile that made peril feel like passion and risk seem like reward.”

Grace Callaway has a wonderful way with words, and I love when she drops little gems like that one in her stories.

This one is about Gigi (Georgiana), the youngest of the Blackwells and the only girl. She has fallen in love with the small town of Chuddums Bottom, where one of her brothers (Ethan, the H in the previous novel, “One Kiss to Desire”) originally decided to live so that he could be a recluse but instead, he found true love and stayed. Many believe the town has been cursed by a specter named “Bloody Thom,” though some of the discoveries in Ethan’s story served to dispel the generational beliefs. Gigi, a romantic and eternal optimist, believes that the story of Thomas and Rose is a love story, and she wants to help the town her brother has settled in grow and be prosperous once again, so she decides to focus her time and efforts on rejuvenating the once famous spa. Working along side Miss Letty, a woman who had been down on her luck as many residents of the town had been, she creates a water brand that claims to have the ability to make people fall in love. It has even been successful when she sold it in London, so maybe she is onto something after all! And the attention of the grand reopening of the spa will certainly mean that the town will benefit further.

Conrad Godwin is known as a ruthless businessman who has made his fortune the hard way. He was shunned by his family as a child, bullied by relatives that should have cared for him, lost both of his parents in his youth, send to a boarding school of hard knocks, and found notoriety as a prizefighter, a role that allowed him to earn enough to begin his businesses. He has a single-minded mission: destroy those who wronged him…and anyone else who gets in the way of that goal. His sights are currently set on Chuddums, the home of a man that turned him and his mother away from their rightful place in their greatest time of need. The problem is, this new spa and its silly water are gaining a lot of attention, bringing more people to the town, resulting in a resurgence of the town, which benefits the man he is seeking to crush beneath his top-of-the-line boots. His solution is to buy the spa and shut it down, ensuring that his enemy cannot profit. There is one little, spirited, beautiful problem: Gigi Blackwell. She refuses to allow him to ruin what she has worked so hard to restore.

Gigi and Conrad butt heads many times as a result of their opposing goals, though they are equally fascinated by each other, so their disdain often ends in passion. As they end up spending more time together, they begin to fall in love, though Conrad’s secrets threaten their newfound romance. Will they find a way to compromise so that Conrad can get his revenge and Gigi can continue her efforts to restore Chuddum Bottoms? Or will one too many secrets end their story before it can truly begin?

I really liked the plot points in this story as well as the steamy goodness! My only criticism is I felt like Conrad was a little too over the top with his need for revenge and was unwilling to listen to Gigi when he had told her repeatedly how much he valued her intelligence and resourcefulness. I was glad the angst of that situation did not last very long.

Overall, another wonderful story from Grace Callaway that I would highly recommend!

  14. Michelle C –

If you like a good enemies to lovers trope you will adore this read. Lady Gigi is a delight and her genuine interest in the people of Chuddums endears her to all. Conrad’s character is a bit murky to start but you soon understand his motivations. This makes for a captivating read that is fun, quirky, and at times, poignant. I love the steamy scenes and the banter between Gigi and Conrad, but I also really loved the relationship between Gigi and her mother. This book is 100% standalone and can be read that way. But if you’ve read Marcus and Pandora‘s story, there are several moments in this book that are even more meaningful. When Pandora was warning Gigi about secrets, it immediately took me back to their book. Love the connections. These characters feel like you truly get to know them.

  15. Margaret Murray-Evans –

Lady Gigi Harrington and Conrad Godwin meet under revealing circumstances. She hesitates to trust him. He hides his plans of revenge and destruction of the village. To seduce Gigi is his new obsession and he takes every opportunity to do so. Caught in his web of seduction, she is blind to his lies by omission. As passionate lovers, their relationship is built on shaky ground. A long romance, where the hero has a ruthless, cutthroat disposition, with revenge and sex constantly on his mind. Can he be redeemed? Interwoven is the curse of the village.
Includes a crossover of characters from the previous book.
